Fit comes before colour
A considered choice starts with the measurements, the pet and the equipment you already own. This note draws on RSPCA guidance and on the size guides our brands publish.
Measure for the exact product
Use the selected manufacturer’s size chart. Sizes such as small and medium vary between brands, and brands measure in different places. Our head collar brand, Canny, measures the neck just behind the ears for the Canny Collar; our harness brand, ACTIVEDOG, lists a chest range and a neck range for each size. Measure your dog the way that brand describes before you choose.
Check the fit, then check it again
The RSPCA says a well-fitted harness or collar is essential so your dog can walk comfortably on a leash. For a collar, its guidance is that you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under it. Puppies grow quickly: the RSPCA suggests checking a puppy’s collar fit at least a few times a week, and the same goes for a harness. Recheck fit after every adjustment and follow the instructions supplied with the item.
Choose the tool for the job
The RSPCA Knowledgebase describes a harness as ideal for walking and training, because it stops a dog pulling on and potentially hurting its neck. For most dogs that pull, it names a front-attach harness as the most appropriate management tool. It also says check chains, slip collars and prong collars must not be used.
Look at the connections
Matching colours do not guarantee matching parts. Check clip sizes, attachment points, intended use and load limits before combining accessories.
Give carriers a closer look
External dimensions are not the same as usable space. Consider internal room, ventilation, opening size and your pet’s ability to settle comfortably, as well as the stated weight limit.
