Hard-base vs hammock seat covers: what to check before you buy

Back-seat covers for dogs usually come in two styles. A hammock cover clips to the front and back headrests and makes a sling across the back seat. A hard-base cover adds a firm panel on the seat, so the surface stays flatter.

Questions to ask about any cover

  1. Does it fit your back seat? Measure the seat width and check the maker's fit notes.
  2. Can people still sit in the back? Some covers block the whole seat.
  3. How do you clean it? Look for the maker's care instructions.
  4. What does your dog need while you drive? A seat cover is not a restraint. Use a suitable restraint for your dog.
